Adobe Releases Film Worked On By Creatives In All Corners—But It’s ‘Unfinished’

What if happily ever after proceeded to get happier? Creation often thrives in the gray area between done and undone, and Adobe entertains this notion with The Unfinished Film, a collaborative experiment that invites creators to take the reins on an incomplete story by artist and director Sam Finn.

The short aims to reimagine the filmmaking process as something open-ended and refreshingly unpredictable, made even more explorative with artificial intelligence in the mix.

The Unfinished Film begins with a starter sequence directed by Finn, who intentionally left his story unresolved. Now, filmmakers, designers, and digital artists are being called on to finish it in their own voice.

Adobe has made the original footage available for download, with the goal of seeing how creators around the globe interpret and reshape the narrative using AI-powered tools, including Adobe Firefly’s suite of copyright-safe generative models.

The film has branched out with interpretations by a handful of early contributors. VFX artist Phil Cohen, creative director Noemie Pino, cinematographer Keenan Lam, and designer Jad Kassis have each put their spin on Finn’s sequence, showcasing how differently a single creative seed can grow when placed in new hands. From tone and texture to storytelling arcs, every version reflects a different perspective. And that multiplicity is part of the point.

Rather than wrapping a finished product with a bow, the company sees this initiative as a celebration of the unfinished, the uncertain, and the collaborative. Adobe welcomes a future where AI amplifies the intent of the artist rather than replacing them, supporting quicker iteration and more experimentation.

Finn perceives the project as a response to traditional filmmaking gatekeeping. Paired with accessible generative tools, it represents a new kind of storytelling, one that values curiosity over control.

“Now anyone with a vision can start,” Finn explained. “For the first time, filmmaking feels like a stream-of-consciousness art form.”

At its core, The Unfinished Film is a prompt: what happens when you leave space for others to respond? Whether moodboarding, experimenting with visual style, or editing a final scene, creative minds are encouraged to explore without limits.
