McDonald’s Reveals Packaging Changes That Could Greatly Influence Its Industry

Fast food giant McDonald’s might not be creating an eco-friendlier version of its logo anytime soon, but the same can’t be said about all of its packaging.

The Golden Arches recently announced that it aims to have 100 percent of its packaging come from recyclable, renewable, or certified sources by 2025.

According to Inc., “McDonald’s uses almost 1.5 million tons of packaging worldwide every year, and that only about 50 percent of this packaging comes from recycled, renewable, or certified materials. Further, only 10 percent of McDonald’s restaurants offer bins for customers to recycle their trash.”

All that could change less than a decade from now. The company has added that it’s striving to recycle guest packaging in every single McDonald’s restaurant by 2025. Francesca DeBiase, McDonald’s Chief Supply Chain and Sustainability Officer, explains:



“As the world’s largest restaurant company, we have a responsibility to use our scale for good to make changes that will have a meaningful impact across the globe.”

DeBiase continues, “Our customers have told us that packaging waste is the top environmental issue they would like us to address. Our ambition is to make changes our customers want and to use less packaging, sourced responsibly and designed to be taken care of after use, working at and beyond our restaurants to increase recycling and help create cleaner communities,”

To achieve these milestones, McDonald’s will partner with leading industry professionals, governments and environmental bodies to create smarter packaging designs, execute improved recycling programs, as well as educate employees plus customers.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates McDonald’s strong leadership in developing packaging and recycling solutions at a scale that can extend the life of our natural resources and push its industry toward more sustainable practices,” commented Sheila Bonini, Senior Vice President, Private Sector Engagement, World Wildlife Fund.

It’s heartening to see major brands take the lead when it comes to influencing more positive change for the environment. Perhaps the “world’s first” plastic-free straw that’s not only biodegradable, but also edible, is something that might be added to fast food restaurants’ utensil collection in the not-too-distant future.
