Eulda '07
BY Joshua Tang

Like a surgeon who meticulously operates on his patient, logo designing is all about precision and accuracy. Every logo on every page of Eulda’07 is a reflection of the many hours of blood and sweat these designers have put into. Not only has the designing process been tedious, but also the judging process, which consists of a three-tier voting system. Possibly the most anticipated logo design annual of the year, there is no better way to acknowledge the best of logo designs from Europe than the Eulda’07.

Title: Eulda '07: European Logo Design Annual
Publisher: Eulda Books
Foreword: Jacques Lange

Logo designing is an intricate process that requires nothing but perfection. The margin of error is so minute that it leaves no room for mistakes. Colors, shapes and typography are all intertwined with one another to form something extraordinary that tells the personality of the company. One single graphic is able to speak volumes of a company’s style and attitude. Companies spend a great deal of time and money to invest in a good designer to design their logos. It is no wonder that Eulda placed so much emphasis and importance in their judging process in order to crown the best logo design of Europe.

The “innovative filter mechanism” of judging by Eulda consists of a three-tier voting system, which is used to emulate the logo designing process, probably a first in the design industry. A surgeon undergoes many levels of observation and analysis before he decides to proceed with a surgery. In a similar vein, jurors of Eulda evaluate designers, picking out the most worthy to be acknowledged as the best of Europe. But no matter how persistent a surgeon believes in his decision or how positive a designer feels about his design, both would agree the public decides if a brand is successful.

Top award winners of Eulda’07 “Best of Europe” went to Jovan Rocanov and Anna Timkov for originality and design excellence. Their logo design concept complemented the mission statement of their client, Consumer Society and Citizen Networks: To protect the rights of consumers. Rocanov wanted “the most simple and distinct way to show protection in a context of consumption”. Thus, she connected two very distinct symbols to form a logo: a bar code to signify consumption and an umbrella to symbolize protection.

Leaving all the technicalities aside, Eulda’07 allows its readers to immerse themselves in the finest of first-class logo designs in Europe stretching from Austria to United Kingdom. In only two years, Eulda has managed to establish itself as one of the most important design events. Highly endorsed by big names such as Icograda, AIGA and Grafia, this annual will undoubtedly excite all senses and quench creative juices.

As we await the highly anticipated Worldwide Logo Design Annual 2008 (Wolda’08), brace yourself for logo designs that can only be the best beyond Europe.
