BY Grace Ng

A world without design is like an empty shell. What makes our world so different from the other planets? Besides the fact that Earth gives life, our world is filled with creativity and innovations that make life on Earth only more rewarding and fulfilling. Indulge in this year's edition of the red dot communication design 2007/2008 annual. Acknowledge the best works from the design world.

Title: : red dot Communication Design Yearbook 2007/2008
Publisher: red dot edition
Edited: Peter Zec

This year’s publication exhibits both aspiring and beautiful designs in various aspects and categories. It is a book of awe; as one flips through, one will feel that the world is really nothing if not for design. Design plays a part in many things and in many ways. To fully grasp all aspects of design in any one lifetime is an achievement marked with impossibility.

Peter Zec mentioned in the book, “This year we have embarked again on our search for particularly successful works from the world of communication design, which make understanding a little easier for us.” red dot Communication Design Yearbook 2007/2008 leads us on a tour to see how design plays a big and important role in our everyday communication.

And for the first time, the “Packaging Design” category was given special attention as packaging becomes increasingly important in the communication between the brand product and the consumer.

After all, design has the ability to change a person's mindset. What is usually dry, humdrum and unimaginative like a typical corporate annual report can become interesting and even engaging.

red dot has gathered a fine collection of annual reports with compelling concepts and, most certainly, ideas I would never have thought of.

The annual report of SAB Sächsische Aufbaubank - Förderbank found its way into the annual this year. The concept of the green and red report is that of a game, with cardboard model standees that can be used to move around the game board. The game comes with a set of questions and answers with regards to the Federal State of Saxony, referred to as a “state of investors” in the report. One cannot help but find the game a resemblance of the familiar Monopoly game.

If communication designers can inject fun into annual reports, they can certainly mute down colors and vibrancy synonymous with McDonald's.

At first glance, the brown poster advertisement looked as if it had a big, brown burger that has gone super bad, but if you look carefully, you will see that it is an advertisement for McCafe, with a coffee bean presented “in such a way that it is reminiscent of a hamburger.”

The chance to look through this book is a privilege. One will feel as if he is walking through the different slabs of Earth with the ever-changing perspectives red dot presents. Towards the end of the book, he will also see the slabs come together to form the world that he is seeing today.
