Jaime Hayón Works
BY Joshua Tang

Just as the blossoming of the first flower in spring represents new life, this book marks the dawning of young designer Jaime Hayón. Spanish artist / designer Jaime Hayón started work as a researcher in Fabrica back in 1997. In just one year, he was appointed head of the design department overseeing interior designs of shops, exhibitions and restaurants. This was in 2004, when Jaime Hayón began his individual illustrious design career, designing a wide spectrum of items from toys to furniture and interior design. Even though this is the first monograph of all his works, one shouldn’t make the mistake of not taking it seriously.

With a total of 23 chapters and more than 300 pages, you can definitely appreciate all the works of Hayón that has been neatly categorised in this compilation. Considered “one of the most influential designers in the years to come”, the anticipation for the release of this book is akin to that of the coming of spring after a long cold winter.

Title : Jaime Hayón Works
Publisher: Gestalten
Author: Jaime Hayón

The contrasting colors of blue and white on the canvas cover strikes the creative cord of the reader because it jumps right out at him, literally grabbing the reader by the wrist to pick this book up.

But wait, the surprises keep coming. When the reader flips the book, he will realise that the pages are not the right side up. To discover and enter the world of Jaime Hayón, the reader will have to flip the book the other way around. So the back of the book is actually its front and everything is the opposite of a regular publication.

That’s probably Hayón’s way of saying he is no ordinary designer! The first impression of the book will knock readers off their feet and wow them, highlighting the fact that Hayón is no conformist. His works are bold, original and have a distinctive touch of Hayón’s rebelliousness in it.

A few chapters in, Hayón slows the upbeat tempo of his attitude with an introduction of himself. The reader will understand Hayón’s inspirations, which is fittingly placed at the start of the book to create a smooth transition to his work. This in-depth introduction, including various interviews and many photos of young Hayón, builds an invisible bond with the reader as though both are long lost friends rekindling their relationship for one another. Hayón comes across as a humble and down-to-earth person that has real aspirations of becoming a great person that can help better the world, which anyone can relate to even if the reader is not a designer.

Everyone knows that spring is a season where everything is fresh and new. That is the exact experience a reader gets when he views Hayón’s works, where the colorful use of the imaginary is like the dawning rays of the spring sun that awakens the reader with new life from the death of winter.

Hayón’s sparkle of ingenuity and forward-looking shine into the future from the final chapters of his book warms the heart’s of readers and hints at more to come. As spring reminds the world that life is beautiful and there is much to anticipate in the coming year, Hayón’s book heralds in a new beginning for the design world.
