Dwell on Design 09'
JUNE 26-28 2009
Dwell on Design - the West Coast’s largest Design Show - returned to Los Angeles. Curated and conducted by the editors of Dwell, the weekend offered a one-day conference, a weekend exhibition with over 175 exhibitors, home tours on the East and West sides of the city, Saturday night Dinner and a Movie at the Geffen with a first-ever Mobile Eatery Restaurant Row, and a wide variety of weekend programming around sustainability, innovation and the intersection of design and food – which included a Sunday Tasting Market with local farmers and artisans.
The weekend kicked off with a one-day conference featuring a series of panels inspired by sections in Dwell. Dwell editors spoke with community leaders, builders, designers, artists, architects, craftsmen and entrepreneurs about topics ranging from future-thinking about developing successful design; sustainability, affordability and efficiency; design in the media; urban density; green entrepreneurship; historic preservation; the intersection of architecture and art direction; the growing convergence of design and food. .Best-selling author Daniel Pink – whose latest book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future which ranked Number Five on The New York Times paperback best-seller list – gave a keynote titled “The Surprising Science of Motivation and Creativity.” Pink argued that organizations not cultivating creativity, a sense of play, and emotion need to reverse course in order to survive and thrive in a changing world.
With over 175 exhibitors on the exhibition floor offering an eclectic mix of inspiration and ideas – from kitchen and bath, greening your home, smart building materials and interior design to dedicated zones.
Dwell Outdoor which was one of the major attractions, hosted an entire pop-up community of prefab, sustainable, affordable and small-scale structures – plus the latest trends in modern outdoor living, landscape architecture, outdoor furniture and new products – all exclusively landscaped by Shades of Green. Attendees were treated to the unveiling of the new Dwell Homes Collection with designs by prominent prefab architects Marmol & Radziner and Joel Turkel of Lindal Cedar Homes.
For the first time this year, Dwell on Design hosted a series of curated exhibits as well.
