The appeal of Japanese anime continues to grow outside of its native shores. Yet its international popularity alone will not save the ailing industry.
Despite their long working hours, Japanese animators continue to receive low pay; veteran animators earn no more than US$50,000 per year, more than US$10,000 less than other Japanese employees of their age. Even their jobs are at risk because of outsourcing and piracy. More government support is needed if the art form is to be preserved.
