How can digital media complement print? They appear fundamentally opposed, but there are small bookstores that use digital media to print on-the-fly copies of books that are sold out. Using a special printer—it costs a whopping US$118,000—books can be printed and bound from an online library of titles. And this market is expected to grow.

But really, apart from that, all things print are making their gradual decline into obsolescence. Guardian is reporting on the significant decline of the regional press, and nationwide papers have already begun their digital crusade.

Digital papers have their own dilemma too. Make all content free or construct a paywall? The Times experiment saw 1.2 million readers leaving the site, but WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell still maintains that paywalls are “essential”.
