How Companies Inspire

Stuck in a rut and running low on creative juice? There are many things you can do to get inspired and keep your work process productive AND fun. Here are some ways successful companies inspire their employees and increase productivity and creativity in the workplace.


Pursue your passion

This sounds like really clichéd advice, but even huge companies like Novartis and 3M swear by its effectiveness. These companies sometimes let their employees spend time on a project they choose. Let’s face it, not every project or work task you’ll have will pique your interest or trigger your passion. Letting yourself work on something you’re passionate about every now and then will re-energize your mind and increase your drive to work and get things done.


Collaborate and consider crowdsourcing

Mozilla, Microsoft, and Wikipedia. These are just three of the thousands of companies nowadays that get big ideas from their customers and clients and put them into action. Not only do crowdsourcing and collaborations help give companies great ideas, it also makes the end users and clients feel important as part of the creative process. As a result, customers continue to patronize their products with the assurance that their concerns and suggestions are being heard.

Working as a freelance songwriter? Why not try holding a contest or starting a collaborative song project? Kina Grannis, a popular YouTube artist, once let her fans submit their own verses to form part of a new song she’s working on. She got fresh ideas, good poetry, a solid following, and a song that became popular even before it was done.


Embrace diversity

Richard Branson of the Virgin companies operates with the belief that no one person, regardless of background and position level, is as smart as all the workers combined. When you’re brainstorming for creative ideas, don’t limit your interactions and consultations to those you believe are “experts” in the field. If you’re already working on a specific idea, run it by someone outside your circle, and ask them for their opinion. You may be surprised at how the best suggestions and the littlest, yet most brilliant, of ideas come from unlikely sources.


Have a conducive/creative work space

We all have those days when we get in a professional or creative rut. A good way to help generate new ideas is being in an environment that is conducive to ideas and creativity. Google is one of the best examples of companies that invest on employees’ comfort because they believe a worker’s productivity is increased the more comfortable they are in their work space. Obviously, not all of us can afford to have cafes, slides, and lush rest lounges in our homes; but we CAN create a relaxed, yet mentally stimulating, workspace.

If you’re working as a freelance writer, have a portion of your work room serve as a mini-library. Sometimes getting rid of writer’s block is as easy as immersing yourself in other people’s words and literary worlds. Also have a spot where you can lie down or sit and rest comfortably, when you’re getting stressed over a deadline or when your mind and body need to “reboot”.
