Cincinnati Art Museum: Ferrari 412P

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Ferrari 412P

Cincinnati Art Museum

Now through January 27, 2008

The highly expressive, sculptural lines of this racecar give it a smooth and well-rounded appearance, but the drama present in their extreme peaks and dives give the 412P an undeniable air of aggression. Developed at a time when wind tunnel experimentation was in its infancy, the 412P’s design boasts an eloquent combination of scientific- and aesthetic-driven features.

While its low bonnet, or hood, enhances the car’s aerodynamic qualities, the contrasting height of the steep, upward curves shrouding the car’s front wheels are more likely style-driven elements born of the designer’s desire to create a memorable and communicative form.

The 412P was part of Ferrari’s prototype racing car series. Its name derives from its technical components: 4 for its 4.0 liter engine displacement, 12 for its 12 cylinder engine configuration, and P for prototype.

This handcrafted car was completed in 1967 and was raced by the Belgium team Ecurie Francorchamps. It is on loan from Harry Yeaggy.
