René Clair is universally regarded as one of the most significant figures in French cinema. His 1924 film Paris qui dort, a comic satire with a science-fiction theme, was years ahead of its time in terms of photographic technique and performances. Clair's wit, imagination and drive helped French cinema to maintain its pre-eminent position in the 1920s and '30s. In 1962, he became the first film director to be elected to the French Academy.
