On view through 2 September 2007
The origin of Toyo Ito's inspirations lies in the human body and in nature. He applies his inspirations to computer technology in order to produce new architectural structures. Recent architectures of Ito have structures that invite us to experience something different from our everyday corporal sensations and have received high acclaim nationally and internationally.
This exhibition focuses on 9 of his projects including "Sendai Mediatheque (completed in 2001)" and his on going project, "Taichung Metropolitan Opera House", in order to expose Ito's architectural philosophy and its practice. At the core of his philosophy is the "emerging grid" which underlies all of his projects. "Emerging grid" implies the organic quality of his curved grid which is closer to the human touch than the rigid and uniform square grid in which traditional architecture is based on.
Ito's works in recent years is the reflection of a man who lives and breathes the air of the moment. The mysterious space presented should bring joy and wonder of architecture to the spectator.
This exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art Hayama is part of the touring exhibition preceded by those at Tokyo and Sendai but has undergone major changes since. It is composed of three sections.
