New Designers Part 2 kicked off with a VIP preview on 11 July, when the best young design graduates were presented with a series of prestigious, industry-supported awards.
Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum London, acknowledged the enormous range of projects and products displayed at the Business Design Centre from 12-15 July. The awards, sponsored by leading brands and organisations, underpin the importance of New Designers as the UK's foremost showcase of graduate design excellence.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the New Designers Audi Design Foundation Award, which marks the Foundation's tenth anniversary.
Ines Sanchez Calatrava from Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication was overwhelmed to receive this prize, which is a £10,000 fund that Ines can use to enhance her design skills and ultimately, her design career.
Ines' strong overall portfolio caught the judges' attention and they said; 'Ines demonstrated a great creative spirit with a blend of playfulness and functionality.' Her work includes a number of commercial ideas, including; mugs with whistling handles, a basin where the water drains directly into the cistern of an attached toilet thereby conserving water, and aeroplane magnets that attach to spoons and amuse small children at mealtimes.
