DMI: Integrating Design into the Strategic Management Process
SEMINAR

September 10-11, 2007, Seattle, USA
The seminar will be from 9:00 until 5:00 on Monday, and from 9:00 until 5:00 on Tuesday. This seminar will be held at The Renaissance Hotel located at 515 Madison Street, Seattle, WA 98104.

Today, leading design firms are taking much more active roles as partners and key resources in the strategic management processes of important clients. This is leading to expanding roles for both design professionals and to new business development and growth opportunities. At the same time, to take advantage of these opportunities, design professionals must deepen their understanding of contemporary strategic management's concerns, objectives, decision criteria, and processes.

This seminar is designed to introduce design professionals to strategic management processes, and to explain the key ways in which design professionals can begin to integrate their professional expertise and services into the formulation and implementation of business strategies in client firms.

What you will learn:

  • The fundamental concerns and objectives of strategic managers at the business unit level

  • The essential elements of a business strategy, and how design activities relate to and can contribute to the definition and realization of business strategy

  • Ways designers can help clients improve their identification and understanding of market segments, selection of market opportunities to develop, and the market positioning of client firms

  • How designers can help clients define, develop, and communicate all eight dimensions of a successful product offer (and not just focus on the design of the product itself)

  • Ways designers can help clients understand which market-facing activities are key to maximizing perceived customer value

  • How designers can help clients implement business strategies more effectively through improved resource identification, organization design, and more effective design of management culture and communication

  • Who should attend:

This seminar is intended for design professionals who want to expand their professional services by becoming more active partners in helping clients develop and grow their businesses through expanded participation in the strategic management processes. The seminar does not presume prior strategic management experience or involvement, but rather covers concisely the essential aspects of strategic management today and the specific ways in which design professionals can expand and integrate their services into clients' strategic management processes.

    What is the benefit:

Participants will acquire familiarity with the language and concepts of strategic managers, with strategic management processes at the business unit level, and with the key ways in which design professionals can expand and integrate their services into these management processes.
