The graduates of the first ever direct marketing summer school were this week congratulated at a drinks reception and presentation held at the IPA.
The success of the summer school which Amanda Phillips, CEO, Proximity London and Chair of the IPA Direct Marketing Futures Group, described as "testament to the industry's investment in new and fresh talent into the industry", has been felt by the students, the participating agencies and the IPA.
Holly Brockwell, one of the students who graduated from university this summer, has accepted a full-time job at Rapier, and six of the other students are eager to pursue a career in various roles within the industry once they have graduated.
Furthermore, in light of the positive outcome of this first summer school, the IPA will be setting up a second DM summer school next year as well as for the digital and healthcare sectors.
During their presentation, the students revealed their first-hand experiences of agency life.
This involved understanding the processes and strategies of direct marketing, deciphering industry acronyms and jargon, deducing the character traits of the different job roles and appreciating the work hard/ party hard balance. They also outlined how useful they found the summer school.
Said one student, "I really understand the complex structure of the business now, which has given me a well rounded view of agency life."
Said another, "There is so much that goes into one advertisement and it's so hard to target your audience, but I feel I have the knowledge and capability to create my own ads now."
