Greg Hildebrandt: Golden and Silver Age of Superheroes

September 16, 2007 - January 13, 2008

These large-scale murals by award-winning illustrator and longtime New Jersey resident, Greg Hildebrandt, have been commissioned for the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation Art Stairway to serve as a striking beacon for the Museum's series of related comic book superhero shows.

Hildebrandt is represented in the major concurrent survey exhibition Reflecting Culture: The Evolution of American Comic Book Superheroes by several works, including two studies for these murals.

This mural project is Hildebrandt's first solo museum show in New Jersey where he has resided since 1963.

Hildebrandt was introduced to Museum staff by his colleague and friend Michael Uslan, executive producer of the Batman movies and consultant on Reflecting Culture: The Evolution of American Comic Book Superheroes.

Eight years ago Greg began to paint a life-long dream. He created his American Beauties series of Retro Pinup art. In the fall of 2003 he began creating art for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

His art has been collected by many famous people, including Michael Jackson and Robin Williams. Greg Hildebrandt has taught at the first and only fully accredited school devoted solely to Cartoon and Graphic Art—the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Inc., based in Dover, New Jersey. He is represented exclusively by the Spiderwebart Gallery (spiderwebart.com).

In recognition of the history of comic books that chronicle the times, Hildebrandt has skillfully designed groupings of these and other early characters to capture the period style and content of Golden and Silver Age comics from the late 1930s to the 1960s.

The DC mural features Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spectre, Green Lantern, Hawkman, and the Flash. The Marvel mural features Captain America, Hulk, Human Torch, Spider-Man, Psylocke, Wolverine, and Thor. Hildebrandt observed, "This commission is by far the largest and most challenging of my career. It is an honor to be part of the History of Comic Art, and to have my paintings featured in this amazing show."

This presentation is intended to enhance the public's understanding and appreciation of the uniquely American art form of comic book illustration, while bringing greater recognition to the masterful work of one of the Garden State's artistic treasures, Greg Hildebrandt.
