Benham Gallery: Peggy Washburn, Ann Pallesen and Shoshannah White
EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Benham Gallery

October 4th - November 10th

Through three unique types of translucent imagery, Peggy Washburn, Anne Pallesen, and Shoshannah White poetically redefine the world around them. By using the eye of the camera combined with individual applications of light, texture and tone, these three women recreate the fact of the literal into their own identified form.

Peggy Washburn brings us a series of portraits illustrating questions pertaining to memory, motherhood and death. Peggy mixes her medium with oils, paints and collage and combines characters from classical Greek and English literature with mathematics to explore tales of myth and moral resolve.

In addition to being widely published, her work has been acquired by major collections, including the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, The Ralph Lauren Collection, and the Museo De Fotografia di Brescia, Italy.

Anne Pallesen captures moments in time that become metaphors of a dramatic narrative. Through the process of lith printing, Anne creates colorful monochrome prints filled with contrast and tonal gradation. Each lith print is unique. Though drawn from a breadth of subject matter,

Anne weaves a common thread of hard shadows and soft highlights to depict exploration during times of wonder, awe, peace and nostalgia. As the Gallery Director of the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle, WA, Anne has curated and installed over 100 exhibitions including the work of Julie Blackmon, Elliott Erwitt, Graciela Iturbide, Mary Ellen Mark, Ken Rosenthal and Hiroshi Watanabe.

Shoshannah White layers images, objects and textures with encaustics, forming an opaqueness through which we see ideas exploring issues of life and death and the incongruities of the heart and mind.

Through these images, Shoshanna brings us a new understanding of the truth. White is an award-winning artist, commercial and editorial photographer. Her works are exhibited nationwide, and are featured in international publications as well as many commercial venues.
