Bombay Sapphire Blue Room Launch
PRESS RELEASE

Local Designs to Showcase Alongside the World's Best at Bombay Sapphire Blue Room Exhibition

Come November 2007, the Bombay Sapphire Blue Room exhibition makes its debut in Singapore at the Monsoonasia Gallery in conjunction with the Singapore Design Festival. The exhibition will showcase the works of local designers alongside some of the past global finalists of the Bombay Sapphire Prize, the biggest international glass award. The works range from small, finely crafted pieces, to spectacular, large ones. The exhibition is touring internationally and runs in Singapore from 17 November till 02 December 2007. Admission is free.

“We are thrilled to bring Bombay Sapphire Blue Room to this part of the globe to be part of the Singapore Design Festival. The timing is perfect for the exhibition to make its debut here as Singapore is now a hotbed for the arts and design, and with a string of successful showings at international events, the world is now watching,” says Lisa Koh, brand manager for Bombay Sapphire in Singapore.

Instantly recognised around the world for its striking translucent blue glass bottle design, it is fitting for Bombay Sapphire to support the use of glass as a medium in design. With the awareness raised about the Bombay Sapphire Prize through the Blue Room Exhibition, it is hoped that more local and regional designers will be drawn to participate in the annual Bombay Sapphire Prize awards.

The entries for the Bombay Sapphire Prize are judged by members of the Bombay Sapphire Foundation, some of whom are leading international designers and respected figures from the glass and design industry. The members include Karim Rashid, Ron Arad, Tom Dixon and Thomas Heatherwick, to name a few.

The works of Marcel Wander, Jonathan Adler, Eva Zeisel, Dakota Jackson and Karim Rashid will also make their way here. Featured in this tour are their versions of the ultimate martini cocktail glasses inspired by and for Bombay Sapphire. These glasses have been showcased in a global advertising campaign for Bombay Sapphire. The display also includes the works of five local young designers who were the finalists of the Bombay Sapphire Designer Glass competition. They are Ben Lai, Irwan S. Azhari, Gabriel Tan Monica Peh and Alec Wong.

The very best entries for the Bombay Sapphire Prize are showcased in a touring glass exhibition called the Bombay Sapphire Blue Room. The exhibition features the designs of contemporary glass works from all over the world. These pieces are/were finalists of The Bombay Sapphire Prize.

The featured works range from architectural structures, installations and sculptures, to lighting and product designs, and martini glasses created for Bombay Sapphire’s advertising campaign. The exhibition tours prestigious museums and galleries throughout the UK and around the globe.

The Bombay Sapphire Prize
Glass is an exciting and versatile material that, in many shapes and forms, surrounds us everyday. As the biggest international glass award, the Bombay Sapphire Prize celebrates the achievements of international artists, designers and architects who work with this challenging material to create stunning results.

The Bombay Sapphire Prize is judged by the Bombay Sapphire Foundation members. The Foundation was established in 2001 and includes leading international designers and some of the world’s most respected figures from the glass and design industry. They include: Ron Arad, furniture and product designer; Tom Dixon, industrial designer; Nicole Farhi, fashion designer; Thomas Heatherwick, designer and winner of the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2002; Lesley Jackson, design historian and writer; Dan Klein, decorative arts and glass specialist, writer and lecturer; Karim Rashid, designer; and Nadja Swarovski.

In April next year, the Foundation will announce the winner of the Bombay Sapphire Prize for 2008 at the world’s biggest design festival held in Milan. Now in its sixth year, the £20,000 award will be presented to the international artist, designer or architect who has demonstrated outstanding innovation and excellence in the use of glass. An additional £5,000 award will be presented to the year’s Best Newcomer. The 20 inspiring glass works shortlisted for the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2008 will be exhibited for the duration of Milan Design Week.
