The MFA Design Criticism Department is set to open its doors at SVA in the fall of 2008, but later this month the department will debut a new series of design criticism readings at the infamous KGB Bar, located at 85 West 4th Street in New York's East Village. This inaugural installment of the bi-monthly series will take place on Thursday, November 29, 7 - 9pm, and feature three critics who will be addressing the concept of home from different angles: conceptual artist Elizabeth Demaray, who will speak about a project in which she created alternative plastic housing for homeless hermit crabs; Metropolis magazine columnist and faculty member Karrie Jacobs, who will read an excerpt from her 2006 book, The Perfect $100,000 House (Penguin), which chronicles the author's nationwide search for a place to call home; and design, technology and culture writer David Womack, who recounts the virtues of lightweight living based on his experiences backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas. Admission is free and the event is open to the general public.
