Relying on traditional and innovative techniques for character profiling, Kaari Upson delves into the mind of a man she's never met.
She obsessively compiles then reinterprets, corrupts, and distorts, facts and assumptions ultimately turning a stranger into a part of herself, a part of her life, a man with a past, present and future.
For her exhibition at the Hammer, Upson introduces pieces of this man's story in a variety of media including painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture.
Blurring the lines of reality and fantasy, public and private, self and the other, Upson demonstrates the ultimately futile task of getting to know someone without ever really knowing him.
