Symposium: Heart of the West- New Art/New Thinking

This one-day symposium will explore multiple perspectives on contemporary western American art. Four prominent American art scholars, curators, and museum directors will discuss topics including modernism vs. realism in early 20th century western painting, museum roles in balancing popular art with elitist institutional imperatives, status of contemporary western art today, and post-modernist conceptions of the West.

On Modern Ground in the American West
Emily Neff, curator of American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, speaks about western lands and their role as catalysts for innovative artistic expression in the early decades of the 20th century.

Collecting & Exhibiting Contemporary Western American Art: A Fifty Year Perspective
B. Byron Price, director of the Russell Center, University of Oklahoma, discusses the collecting history of major western museums and market trends.

Art of the West is More Than Western Art
James K. Ballinger, director of the Phoenix Art Museum, dispels the stereotype of cowboy art and examines the West as artistic muse in the 21st century.

Post-Western: Edgy Art Meets the New Modern West
Gordon McConnell, painter and past curator of the Yellowstone Art Center in Billings, investigates fresh trends in western painting and sculpture.

In addition, the Institute of Western American Art’s permanent collection and the George Carlson: Heart of the West exhibition will be on view in the Dietler Gallery of Western Art.
