Wendy Ewald/Brett Cook: Building Community Through Learning—Amherst College
Mead Art Museum
Now through January 20, 2008
Photographer Wendy Ewald and painter Brett Cook will be on the Amherst College campus this fall working collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty to create six 10 x 30 foot portrait triptychs which will be placed on buildings and mounted outdoors throughout the campus.
The public project grows out of Wendy Ewald’s course Collaborative Art: the Practice and Theory of Working in Communities, which she teaches as Visiting Artist in Residence.
Between September 16 and 23 Cook and Ewald will work with students in the class and others from across campus to photograph and interview a group of eighteen community members comprising students, faculty, and staff. Some of the photographs will be transferred to drawings on vinyl by Brett Cook, in preparation for a day of collaborative creation open to the entire campus.
On Friday, September 28 the campus is invited to a cook-out on the lawn between Fayerweather and Valentine where everyone is encouraged to paint the vinyl portraits, eat, listen to joyous music, talk, and have a good time.
The project will culminate on November 29th when five of the large-scale public works, portraits of eighteen community members, will be mounted across the Amherst College campus and an exhibition of one of the triptychs will open in the Mead Art Museum. The Mead exhibition will also include documentation of the process of collaboration. The exhibition will run through January 20, 2008. A catalogue will document and highlight the full experience.
The Amherst College collaborative project is sponsored by the President’s Office, the Mead Art Museum, and the Department of Art and Art History.
