REBELLAND
Gallery of Modern Art, Gallery 3
13 December 2007- 10 February 2008
Over a six month period GoMA Artist in Residence, Anthony Schrag and Writer In Residence, Magi Gibson encouraged young people to explore the issues of sectarianism, territory, neighbourhood and identity through images and words.
In particular they asked them to think about how these issues impacted on their everyday lives.
Deep divisions between communities based on territorial boundaries emerged. The young people talked of a violent youth gang culture. Rather than stemming from sectarianism or football affiliation, attacks were seen as being either territory-based, or simply directed against someone who was identifiably different.
Individuals within such gangs seemed to be driven by a need for group identity, a desire to get a buzz, and the hope of macho peer-group status.
Each group found their own way of expressing their understanding and experience of their world. Works by both the groups and the artists are combined in this powerful exhibition.
Coming from very different creative and personal backgrounds, Magi and Anthony have collaborated on almost all aspects of REBELLAND. They have pulled the visual and the written together to create an insight into the young people’s experience.
Anthony and Magi also produced their own works in response to these topics.
