Singapore Celebrates red dot Winners
PRESS RELEASE

This year’s red dot award: design concept received 884 entries from 46 countries, an increase of 86% compared to last year, reinforcing the significance of this category of the red dot design award. Of the 884 entries, 105 received the red dot award for outstanding design quality. Another 18 received the distinction red dot: best of the best for highest design quality. These 18 winners are automatically nominated for the competition’s premium award - the red dot: luminary. The red dot: luminary is presented to the single most exceptional design concept of the competition. This year, the Aero X Concept Car from Saab Automobile AG, designed by GM Europe Design captured the imagination of the jury. A sports car inspired from the stylings of fighter jets with an environmentally-friendly heart.

LANXESS Prize
In another step to boost winners‘ chance for commercial success, a new prize called the LANXESS prize was introduced this year to support a winning concept towards commercialisation. Sponsored by LANXESS Pte Ltd, a global leader in specialty chemicals, the LANXESS prize provides important initial funding for winners to commercialise their award winning design concept.

“We are delighted to be part of red dot design award. The biggest hurdle talented designers face is commercialising a great new design and hopefully this award can help them to successfully navigate that road” said Ian Wood, Managing Director, LANXESS Pte, Ltd.

The LANXESS prize of SGD12,000 each was awarded to design concepts, United_Bottle by Instant Architects and Abracadabra! by Lee Jung-Hyun, Chae Won-Sik, Rhea Jeong. The prize will be used by the winners to defray costs relating to the commercialisation of their works such as intellectual property protection, prototyping and production.

26 countries under one roof
Out of 123 winning concepts from 26 countries, the designers of 83 winning concepts travelled from as far as Iran and Slovenia to Singapore to accept their awards. Guests from industry and design were present to add to celebrations.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Ken Koo, red dot design award President, Asia, unveiled this year’s yearbook of winners and invited guests to view the special exhibition of winning concepts. The yearbook and exhibition is a tradition of the red dot design awards, providing designers with a reference to the best in design.
