MAC/VAL - Musee d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne
PRESS RELEASE

Another look at the art scene in France.

The first contemporary museum located in the suburbs of Paris, "MAC/VAL" is now commemorating its 2nd anniversary.

A work by Alain Sechas. Smoke comes out every time she smokes.

You may imagine a quiet residential area when you hear a word "suburb" in Japan, but it nevertheless means an area where low-income groups and immigrants move in because of high rent in urban district and it is sometimes hard to keep the peace over the area in France.

The museum opened in November 2005 in the city of Vitry as a result of symbolic of cultural policy after the prefectural assembly had discussed over 20 years on the prevalence of contemporary arts and it was built by Jacques Ripault.

Arrived at MAC/VAL taking metro and bus from Paris, there is a gigantic sculpture by Jean Dubuffet beside the bus stop.

The museum is located in the middle of the city of Vitry-sur-Seine, surrounded by a park which covers 10,000 square meters planned by Gil Wechsler, owns more than 1000 pieces of art collections mainly from 1950's up to now.

The building takes 13,000m2 of all 20,000m2. 4,000m2 is alloted for both permanent and temporary exhibits, furthermore, there are the 150 seat screening room for the non-figurative arts like films and music, multimedia research room where children, adults and researchers can study on modern art/artist and its history, museum shop, restaurant, and accommodation facilities for foreign artists.

In the museum with modern conveniences, distinguished artists works are exhibited all over rather casually.

Under Alexia Fabre and Frank Lamy's curation, their temporary exhibit has been highly praised since the opening. Also you cannot miss permanent collections that replaced frequently. It is not a common cliched chronological display, and becoming much more spectacular chosen from their solid rich pieces both in quality and quantity.
