Tokyo, - NEC Corporation announced that it has received an order from Taiwan's Tatung InfoComm for the supply of mobile WiMAX systems, which will be used for commercial service.
Tatung InfoComm is an affiliate of a major Taiwanese conglomerate that focuses on BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) business, while Tatung Co. operates as the leading manufacturer/seller of consumer electronics and LCDs. This marks the first order received by NEC for a commercial mobile WiMAX system.
NEC will deliver a total mobile WiMAX system consisting of approximately 200 base stations along with peripheral equipment to Tatung InfoComm.
In August 2007, WiMAX commercial licenses were issued to six operators in Taiwan, including Tatung InfoComm. Tatung and NEC jointly carried out WiMAX-based government medical service trials in Hualien City earlier this year.
These trials were followed by demonstrations at the Taiwan WiMAX Forum in October 2008, which were based on the transportation of a patient by ambulance to the hospital. The WiMAX system demonstrated at the Forum enabled medical information, such as the patient's heart rate and blood pressure, to be sent to the hospital on route via a WiMAX network.
Similarly, the hospital could send the patient's past medical records to the ambulance to enable appropriate emergency treatment to be carried out on route. These demonstrations were a part of the M-Taiwan Project being undertaken by the Taiwanese government to promote the construction of an advanced information society and encourage the growth of domestic industry.
NEC believes its contribution to the implementation of the trials and the demonstrations held at the forum clearly proved the technological superiority of its WiMAX systems, which lead to the order from Tatung InfoComm.
NEC will pioneer global expansion of WiMAX by leveraging its WiMAX experience and know-how and past mobile business successes in the global market.
