Honouring Tradition:Reframing Native Art
The Glenbow Museum
February 16, 2008 – September 28, 2008
Glenbow's upcoming feature exhibition, Honouring Tradition: Reframing Native Art invites visitors to experience the rich artistic traditions of Native people from the Northern Plains and Subarctic regions.
Past and present meet and interact with over 200 colourful objects including shirts, moccasins, baskets, story robes, sculptures, photographs, paintings and mixed media works.
This exhibition marks the first time in Glenbow's history in which traditional objects and art collections will be shown side-by-side. Honouring Tradition challenges views that have defined historical pieces as artifact and separate from contemporary Aboriginal practice.
Aboriginal art from the late 1800s through to the present are merged to highlight the ongoing links to tradition, history and culture.
Honouring Tradition brings new perspectives to both historical and contemporary works and aims to create a dialogue around the complexity of Aboriginal art, its representation and its role in Canadian society.
