School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Trace,” a photography exhibition featuring contemporary approaches to the medium.
Ranging from realist to conceptual, the exhibition explores photography as a tool for social commentary, self-examination and intellectual inquiry. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include Joon Hyun Hwang, Natasha Kaser, Allison Kaufman, Bok-Soon Lee, Tiana Peterson and Arin Yoon.
Joon Hyun Hwang photographs actors who communicate personal monologues through visual language in his series, Monologue Without Words. By translating the monologue into a still photographic image, the artist examines how non-verbal information affects communication. Hwang is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
Natasha Kaser’s photographs portray youthful subjects in moments of self-reflection. The artist achieves a mood of nostalgic contemplation by emphasizing the subjects’ naturally lit environments. Kaser is a student in the BFA Photography Department.
Allison Kaufman examines the lives of divorced, middle-aged men in her project, From the Divorced Men Series. The artist photographed divorced men in their domestic surroundings to explore what their environments communicate about them. Kaufman is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
Bok-Soon Lee, a performance artist, investigates gender roles in contemporary society. Included in the exhibition is the video Tip Toe on Wall Street and still photographs documenting other performances. Lee is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
Tiana Peterson’s photographic sculptures use the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright to explore the interplay of art and commodity. The artist’s recontextualization of objects and ideas results in visual puns that reference the marketing machinery that has developed around the famous architect's work. Peterson is an alumnus of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
Arin Yoon's photographs of semi-hidden figures and abandoned clothing hint at larger narratives. Yoon is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
