Design Workshop: Internship 2008
EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Internship 2008

Santa Fe, New Mexico

May 28, 2008

Since 1985, Design Workshop has hosted a summer internship program for students of LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING, URBAN DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE, BUSINESS, FINE ARTS and REAL ESTATE. This provides a great opportunity for them to accomplish some of their most important goals:
  • Introduce students and professionals to the firm and the projects

  • Provide an opportunity for Design Workshop to develop relationships with future graduates for full time positions following graduation

  • Play a role in shaping the education of future professionals in the industry

  • Provide for the cultural exchange of design philosophies and ideas

The internship kicks off on May 28, 2008 with a 10-day intensive charrette in Santa Fe, New Mexico and is followed by a 10-week paid internship in one of our seven offices. It promises to be a great summer filled with hands-on learning, critical design discussion, and sometimes even a little fun. Find out what previous students said of their experience.

    The Internship Charrette
One of the most exciting features of the internship program is the 10 day kick-off charrette. This year, this intensive design session will be held at Santa Fe, New Mexico office. Located at 7,000 feet above sea level in the high desert region of the southwestern United States, Santa Fe is the country’s oldest capital, founded in 1607 by Spanish explorers. Santa Fe boasts the third largest art market in the United States and is home to a rich diversity of cultural backgrounds.

However, its housing market is largely composed of second home owners and a main component of the city’s income is generated through its tourist industry, as Santa Fe is reputed for its quality resorts. These economic realities, contributing to income inequalities, are challenges for the city of Santa Fe.

Typically, remote cities are slow-growing, but Santa Fe is currently experiencing a 21st century boom. A new railyard district is under construction, and will consist of a large public park, mixed use developments, and a farmer’s market.

In addition, a much needed regional commuter rail linking Santa Fe with Albuquerque will create new connections and development opportunities that will have a lasting impact on Santa Fe.

It is an exciting time of change in the “city different” and the objective of the charrette will be to study the various aspects of this remarkable place as it evolves in these times of change.
