January 2008
Stuart Rose has started 2008 on a very high note indeed - with the news that he has been awarded a knighthood as part of the Queen's New Year's Honours list. The Marks & Spencer chief - who is named in the list as Stuart Alan Ransom Rose - will receive the accolade "for services to the retail industry and to corporate social responsibility".
As well as turning around the financial fortunes of M&S since he took the reins in 2004, Rose has pledged to plough £200 million into green initiatives - such as transforming the business into a carbon neutral operation and using out-of-date food as a source of recyclable energy - over five years to 2011, marking the brand out among British retailers as a pioneer of environmentally-friendly practices.
His knighthood comes 18 months after fellow retail magnate, TopShop boss Philip Green, received the honour. Jo Malone, the cosmetics guru who recently made a glittering return to the limelight on VogueTV, will receive an MBE, as will Antoni & Alison design duo Antoni Burakowski and Alison Roberts and Fashion Fringe founder Colin McDowell.
Designers Jasper Conran and Karen Millen will be awarded OBEs, while River Island chief executive Richard Bradbury and Maurice Bennett - owner of the Warehouse Group, Oasis stores and the Phase Eight brand - have been named CBE recipients.
