Insight into Printing Business for Yorkshire Students
PRESS RELEASE

January 2008

South Yorkshire students are being given a rare insight into the printing industry, as part of a newly launched initiative.

Barnsley Academy's BTEC Art and Design course is giving its students the opportunity to take part in the pilot scheme which is aimed at inspiring youngsters to enter the print industry, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Helen Soutter, a local Business Link advisor, told the paper: "The idea of the pilot scheme is to introduce the students to the printing sector and shift perceptions to illustrate that the technology and possibilities within the industry have moved on from the days of our parents and actually make printing a very desirable industry to work in.

"We want to get youngsters to think about their future. The students can also see that the career opportunities are not just about being a printer; they can include computing, design, pre-press, finishing, sales and general management."

As part of the pilot scheme those taking part will visit three small printers in Sheffield and Rotherham before paying a trip to Johnston Press at Dinnington near Rotherham.

If it is successful in Yorkshire, the scheme will be rolled out across the UK.
