Logitech Selects Synaptics ClearPad™ Technology for Universal Remote
PRESS RELEASE

January 2008

Synaptics Inc., a leading developer of human interface solutions for mobile computing, communications and entertainment devices, announced that its ClearPad™ capacitive sensing technology is shipping in the new Logitech Harmony® One advanced universal remote control.

The Harmony One remote offers the same one-touch, activity-based control as other Harmony remotes, yet makes controlling home entertainment even easier with a full-color touchscreen, an intuitive button layout and an exceptionally comfortable user-friendly design. It features a Synaptics full-featured, capacitive-based interface solution that includes an interactive touchscreen and control buttons. Synaptics' ClearPad solution provides an intuitive, easy-to-use human interface that enhances the user’s experience while also enabling an aesthetically pleasing design.

People can control their entertainment systems by lightly touching an icon and the Harmony One remote does the rest, including turning on the chosen systems in the correct order and setting the preferred inputs. To watch a DVD, for example, people simply touch “Watch a DVD” on the touchscreen. The Harmony One remote turns on the TV, the DVD player and the A/V receiver. Then, if necessary, the Harmony One remote allows the user to adjust the volume on the stereo system. There is no need to control system components individually – the Harmony One remote manages them all. The capacitive arrow icons along the side of the remote control’s LCD allow users to page through activity-specific menus, such as favorite channels.

“Logitech’s Harmony One remote brings a new level of interactivity to the user thanks to Synaptics’ capacitive touchscreen solution,” said Ashish Arora, Vice President and General Manager of Logitech’s Harmony business unit. “Logitech worked closely with Synaptics to customize its ClearPad solution, taking advanced universal remotes to a new performance level by allowing users to easily control and enjoy home-entertainment systems with the touch of a finger.”

“Logitech’s implementation of Synaptics’ ClearPad interface allows Harmony One users to intuitively navigate among devices and activities,” said Mark Vena, Vice President of Synaptics’ PC business unit. “The Logitech Harmony One remote illustrates how Synaptics’ technology and experience in custom design enables innovation-driven companies like Logitech to create touchscreen solutions that maximize the functionally of consumer products while making them easier to use.”

ClearPad is an extension of Synaptics’ capacitive sensing technology that is already the industry-standard for touchpads in notebook PCs. A ClearPad sensor can be mounted under plastic or glass, providing OEMS with easy integration and attractive design options.
