Feng Zhengjie, My Parents, 2006, Oil on Canvas, 300x300 each (3 panels)
The artwork to be donated is currently on show in the exhibition, Primary Colours: Feng Zhengjie. The exhibition showcases 25 artworks by the prolific artist. A renowned artist in the contemporary Chinese art scene, Feng Zhengjie draws upon a spectrum of motifs from popular culture and folk art in his work, which examines consumer society and responds to the issues confronting contemporary China.
Speaking on his donation to the Singapore Art Museum, artist Feng Zhengjie says, “This is an artwork that I will not sell as it holds a significant meaning to me. This work was done in commemoration of my parents’ death and I would like to present it to Singapore Art Museum to show my appreciation for the effort they have put in to make this exhibition a success.”
Feng’s mother passed away in 2001 and subsequently, his father passed away in 2006. Feng went through a period of depression in which he stopped painting. In search of something to do, he bought some clay sculptures of skulls from the local crafts shop and painted them bright pink. Using this as an avenue to free his emotions, he eventually started painting again and created the artwork, My Parents. The work consists of three panels and each panel measures three metres by three metres.
Director of Singapore Art Museum, Kwok Kian Chow, says, “SAM is very honoured to receive this very special group of artworks as a donation from Feng Zhengjie. We have discussed extensively about "My Parents," which is different from any other works done by the famed artist. The donation is certainly a valuable addition to the Museum’s collection of contemporary Asian art as we embark on a new contemporary art focus."
Primary Colours: Feng Zhengjie opened to public on 29th January and ends on 20th April 2008.
