NextWave Wireless Announces WiMAX Ecosystem Partners
PRESS RELEASE

February 2008

On the heels of its recent announcement to enable a complete mobile WiMAX handset reference platform through its technology partnership with EB (Elektrobit), NextWave Wireless Inc. (NASDAQ: WAVE), a global provider of mobile multimedia and wireless broadband technologies, announced a strategic expansion of its ecosystem to enable "no compromise" end-to-end mobile WiMAX solutions.

Extending its ecosystem to drive WiMAX market innovation, NextWave Wireless and its partners closely collaborated on the development of a handset reference design, and will enable the creation of even more innovative products. Participating in this partnership are a number of wireless and multimedia technology leaders, including:

  • Qtopia, providing their comprehensive application platform and user interface for the Linux-based operating system (OS);

  • EB, the main device integrator providing platform specification, hardware development, form-factor mechanical design, antennae specification, software configuration and integration of 3rd party components;

  • Opera Software ASA, offering their version 9 Web browser and Web-driven user interface solution;

  • HelloSoft, providing its voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology for WiMAX system-on-a-chip (SoC) architectures so as to enable cost-effective power-efficient single-chip VoWiMAX designs;

  • MontaVista Software, delivering its Mobilinux(TM) 5.0, the mobile OS used in 90 percent of Linux-based smartphones;

  • Texas Instruments, supporting the initiative with its OMAP(TM) application processor technology to advance the mobile multimedia experience.

    The goal of NextWave's ecosystem development initiative is to ensure device manufacturers have ready-access to proven technology that work seamlessly with NextWave's 4G chipsets. This approach accelerates time-to-market and enables richer, more innovative products to proliferate. Within the ecosystem, NextWave Wireless offers its own WiMAX baseband SoC and matched multi-band RFIC (radio frequency integrated circuit).

    "By working together with our partners, we are setting the stage for a rapid move to cutting-edge 4G technology, with WiMAX as the centerpiece of this movement," said Ed Redmond, general manager, Semiconductor division, NextWave Wireless. "We believe a vibrant ecosystem is essential to the acceptance of WiMAX-based products by manufacturers, operators and consumers, and we are proud to have relationships with this impressive cast of partners."

    Redmond continued, "They will play an important role in helping us to deliver highly integrated reference designs that will enable carriers and device manufacturers to offer enhanced mobile products and services worldwide."

    NextWave Wireless plans to continue to broaden its WiMAX partner ecosystem in order to enable new and advanced mobile multimedia devices to the mass market - from CPE modems and PC cards to multimode/smartphone handsets and mobile multimedia terminals.
