In 2003, 010 celebrated its first 20 years with a book containing a fully annotated catalogue of all 427 publications. In 2008, to mark its first quarter century, 010 is to publish a supplement covering the past five years. Clearly, a publishing house is judged on the books it publishes, and the many projects and ideas that fail to materialize for whatever reason remain invisible.
Unpublished 010 seeks to make amends by cataloguing a great many unpublished or yet-to-be-published projects. There are at least as many of these as projects that did make the grade. An early example from 1988 is Rem Koolhaas’s The Story of the Pool, with illustrations by Madelon Vriesendorp. This got no further than a magnificent cover design with a Russian Constructivist (Koolhaas!) on his way from Moscow to New York. A more recent example is a comprehensive study and analysis of Dutch architectural magazines in the 19th and 20th centuries, with a complete bibliography of all published magazines beginning with the first, Nederlandsch Bouwkunstig Magazijn, dating from 1834. In Unpublished 010, you can read why these two and the many other projects never saw the light of day.
