AT&T Handles Significant Surge in Wireless Data Traffic during Super Bowl Sunday
PRESS RELEASE

February 2008

Hundreds of thousands of sports fans who descended on the Valley of the Sun this past weekend used their wireless phones for more than just calling home. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced a significant spike in data traffic in the areas around University of Phoenix Stadium for the Super Bowl, TPC Scottsdale for the FBR Open and the Scottsdale Convention Center for supporting activities and events.

Sunday's total data usage in those areas was 2.1 terabytes (2,100 gigabytes) of data. This is 14 times the data traffic used during an average Sunday, or the equivalent to more than 450 full-length feature films on DVD.

"Clearly, our customers took advantage of a wide range of wireless data services on their phones, BlackBerry devices and iPhones on Sunday," said Jeff McElfresh, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless operations in Arizona. "We anticipated for this surge in use, and our network performed exceptionally well."

AT&T doubled its network capacity around University of Phoenix Stadium and added additional capacity at TPC Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Convention Center. AT&T placed two temporary Cell on Wheels (COWs) sites adjacent to University of Phoenix Stadium, as well as additional capacity to existing cell sites in the area.

"Preparations for the Super Bowl and FBR Open were just part of our ongoing program to upgrade and expand our wireless network," said McElfresh. "These enhancements to our network meant our customers were able to enjoy the festivities with the network performance that they are used to receiving through AT&T."

AT&T has invested more than $18 billion nationally over the past three years, including the addition of more than 242 new cell sites throughout Arizona, an increase in wireless coverage of more than 60 percent. The network investment now gives customers access to approximately 45,000 national cell sites.
