The New York Times Company Foundation to Sponsor Ethnic Media Watchdog Worksho
PRESS RELEASE

March 2008

Journalists from The New York Times and Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc (IRE) will conduct a two-day workshop on investigative and enterprise reporting for reporters and editors from foreign-language newspapers in New York City. The Ethnic Media Watchdog Workshop will also invite enrolled college students studying journalism to participate. The workshop will be held at The New York Times Building, the newspaper's new headquarters in New York City, on May 9 and 10.

The workshop will include sessions on covering the police and the courts; how to use the Internet for enterprise stories; how to investigate immigration issues; and how to obtain background information on people and businesses. Sessions will examine how best to exploit laws that provide access to government records and explore the rights of journalists when dealing with legal issues.

Funded by The New York Times Company Foundation, the workshop is one of six that The New York Times Institutes for Journalists will sponsor this year. It will be run by IRE, in collaboration with the New York Community Media Alliance (formerly The Independent Press Association NY) and New America Media.

The workshop will provide a wealth of practical techniques and resources for editors, reporters and producers at news organizations of all sizes. Much of the training can be used immediately for daily and beat reporting.

Sessions will be led by investigative reporters and longtime trainers, and there will be opportunities for informal discussions and story brainstorming. Hands-on training in computer-assisted reporting, including the use of spreadsheets and databases to enhance reporting, will be offered on a first-come-first-serve basis to a limited number of participants.

Those interested in participating in the workshop may apply or obtain more information, including the preliminary schedule, at http://www.ire.org/training/ethnicmediaws/NY08EM.php, or by calling 573-882-2042. The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on May 9; the computer-assisted reporting classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 10.

The workshop fee is $25 for working journalists and $10 for students. The fee will cover a one-year IRE membership. IRE is a nonprofit professional association and educational institute of more than 4,000 members. The deadline for online registration is noon (CST) on Friday, May 2. After that date, attendees will need to fill out a PDF form found online under Registration on www.IRE.org and bring it to the workshop to register the day of the event. The New York Times Building is located at 620 Eighth Avenue.
