Tatara Systems, the leader in SIP-based femtocell convergence, and AirWalk Communications, Inc. an industry innovator in IP Radio Access Network (IP-RAN) solutions, announced they are collaborating to deliver SIP-based femtocell and macrocell network solutions.
Tatara and AirWalk are developing a solution that enables CDMA network operators to leverage VoIP or IMS infrastructure with AirWalk’s EdgePointTM femtocell and OneRANTM macrocell solutions. A key aspect of this solution is an IOS-SIP adapter that resides in the EdgePoint or OneRAN products and communicates directly with the Tatara CDMA 1xRTT Convergence Server (TCS/CDMA-1xRTT), which is a standards-based SIP/IMS interworking application server that ensures service parity with the macro network.
“Tatara is excited to be teaming with AirWalk on this innovative approach to SIP-based CDMA network integration. Mobile operators are looking to expand radio coverage using low cost solutions that leverage commodity SIP/VoIP infrastructure for transport and control. They also desire to preserve their existing investment in the mobile core, where subscribers are provisioned, managed, and billed,” stated E.Y. Snowden, president and CEO of Tatara Systems. “AirWalk is leading the market with the introduction of advanced femtocells and IP-RAN macro radio access solutions, and we look forward to working with them.”
“The true value of this collaboration between Tatara and AirWalk is that operators can deploy both femtocell and macrocell solutions into their existing networks and retain full feature transparency while lowering overall expenditures,” stated Serge Pequeux, president and CEO of AirWalk. “These IP core networks allow operators to scale their networks gracefully and economically.”
The TCS/CDMA-1xRTT is a cost effective solution for integrating femtocells into a mobile operator’s network, and supports the service interworking and call state processing for controlling the flow of voice and messaging traffic over the IP core, while ensuring service parity with the existing macro network. Tatara and AirWalk also plan to collaborate on deploying “switchless” IP-RAN macro network solutions, where the convergence server is used to buffer the IP-RANs from having to interface directly with the MSC’s in the existing mobile core. Mobile operators now have a lower cost switching solution that can be deployed without reconfiguring or upgrading the equipment in the existing mobile core.
AirWalk’s EdgePointTM femtocell will be demonstrated at CTIA Wireless 2008, on April 1-3, 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Airwalk’s booth 7261 and Tatara Systems’ booth 3300.
