MontaVista Software Supports Embedded Linux Commercialization
PRESS RELEASE

April 2008

MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, announced the availability of MontaVista Linux Professional Edition to develop and run applications using the Virtex-5® FXT family of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), the new system integration platform from FPGA leader Xilinx®.

Developers will be able to use MontaVista’s out-of-the box quality, integration, and real-time performance to rapidly develop applications that leverage the Virtex-5 FXT platform’s PowerPC® 440 processor blocks, GTX high speed transceivers, and more than 190 GMACs of DSP processing performance.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is the embedded Linux platform for device developers who want the benefits of open source plus quality, integration, support, and rapid time to market.

"The new Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT FPGAs conserve board space and costs, and yet provide high performance, high-speed serial I/O, and PowerPC 440 compatibility," explained Patrick MacCartee, director of product management, MontaVista Software. "We expect that many of the thousands of MontaVista customers who design wired and wireless communications devices, audio-video broadcast equipment, military and aerospace systems, industrial devices and other products will want to review the fresh capabilities that Virtex-5 FXT FPGAs provide to embedded Linux engineers."

The Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT devices are the industry’s first FPGAs with embedded PowerPC440 processor blocks, high-speed RocketIO™ GTX transceivers, and dedicated XtremeDSP™ processing capabilities to offer designers high levels of system integration and performance.

With integrated 32KB instruction and 32KB data caches, each processor delivers up to 1,100 DMIPS at 550 MHz. Tightly coupled to the PowerPC440 blocks is a new integrated 5x2 cross bar processor interconnect architecture that provides simultaneous access to I/O and memory for high system throughput.

"MontaVista is at the forefront of providing embedded Linux commercialization for device developers who use the industry standard Power Architecture, so Xilinx and MontaVista worked together to enable the features and support that our customers need," said Tim Erjavec, director, embedded and DSP marketing at Xilinx. "Xilinx understands the importance of giving developers access to the operating systems and development tools that they prefer."

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition for Xilinx Virtex-5 FXT FPGAs will be available for developers and design teams in Q2 2008.
