AT&T Intellectual Property, a subsidiary of AT&T Inc., announced the signing of Sony Corp. as the latest licensee in its global MPEG-4 video-licensing program.
This new licensee, AT&T's fourth in Japan, is a recognized leader in the consumer electronics, game, motion picture, music, online, financial and mobile handset industries. AT&T has developed intellectual property that is widely regarded as essential to MPEG-4 standards, which provide more efficient compression for transmission and storage of video content.
The AT&T patents underlying the company's global licensing effort are considered essential to the practice of ISO/IEC 14496-2 and 14496-10, also known as MPEG-4, Part 2 and MPEG-4, Part 10 (H.264).
"AT&T is committed to the growth of its intellectual property licensing program, and we're excited about enabling equipment developers and video content service providers, such as Sony, to take full advantage of AT&T's MPEG-4 intellectual property with fair and reasonable licensing terms," said Scott Frank, president and CEO, AT&T Intellectual Property.
