The winners of the DESIGN 21 competition Power to the Pedal have been determined.
This competition received over 200 entries representing 41 countries. An expert jury selected their favorite entries to go on to the final round of judging. At the same time, DESIGN 21 community voted for their favorite, which also went on to the final round of judging.
From this pool, 3 winners were chosen.
Pedal Power Pack by Ben Decherd of Portland, Oregon, currently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design earned the First Prize position, garnering high feedback from the judges for " identifying the potential uses of (bicycle as) a portable power generator". Ben will receive $5,000, a certificate from UNESCO and a special Allumonde Ring to commemorate the occasion.
Second Prize winner, Retrofit Folding Handlebars by Joe Wentworth of London, UK similarly earned high marks for being "An elegant and intelligent solution to a common problem." Joe will receive $3,000, a certificate from UNESCO and a special Allumonde Ring.
Both the Third Prize and Most Popular awards go to Joseph Kim and Jinwook Hwang from Seoul, South Korea for their entry The Sound from Wind, which the judges said "mixes future aspiration with nostalgia well." Joseph and Jinwook will share $1,500 for winning Third Prize and $500 for winning Most Popular, and will each receive a certificate from UNESCO and a special Allumonde Ring.
DESIGN 21: Social Design Network congratulates the winners, and would like to thank all members who participated by entering or by voting. More competitions will be announced in the coming weeks and months.
