This year’s special exhibition in the Art Unlimited hall is devoted to artist-designed magazines. Artist Magazines is curated by Lionel Bovier, Director of JRP/Ringier, in cooperation this year with artist AA Bronson, co-founder of General Idea and Director of Printed Matter, New York.
Since 2005, Art Basel has regularly devoted a booth in the Art Unlimited sector to the presentation of a very special type of object: The artist book. Recognizing that artists’ formats and media are continually evolving, Art Basel commissioned art historian Lionel Bovier, Director of JRP/Ringier, to put together a survey of this distinctive art form. After a panoramic overview of artist books in the 21st century, an exhibition dedicated to the small press scene of the 1960s and 70s, and a presentation of artist records, this year’s project highlights artist magazines.
Many artists, past and present, have used magazines (and the press in general) as a vehicle for their work. The latest event highlights the specific features that make the magazine an attractive artistic format: its periodicity, selective target readership, easy circulation, low production costs, and editorially driven subject matter.
Bringing together a selection of historical examples of periodicals such as File Magazine by General Idea, Interfunktionen, or Art & Language, the exhibition also offers a new distribution
platform for initiatives such as Permanent Food by Maurizio Cattelan, Ver by Rirkrit Tiravanija, or Union by Mircea Cantor.
In cooperation with AA Bronson (Printed Matter, New York), the curator will also provide the public with access to a limited stock of printed matter (historical and contemporary) supplied by the publishers or the artists themselves, thereby encouraging renewed dissemination of these projects within the context of the show. In addition AA Bronson and Lionel Bovier will be discussing this subject in Art Lobby on Thursday, June 5, between 2 and 3 p.m.
