Art On Paper – Acquisitions by The Rijksmuseum 1996 – 2008

In the summer exhibition Art on paper, the Rijksmuseum Maastricht is displaying a selection of drawings, prints and photos that were acquired for the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam under director - general Ronald de Leeuw. An exciting selection from almost 15.000 acquisitions will be shown, consisting of art on paper from the late Middle Ages to the late twentieth century, including an excursion to Japan.
The exhibition starts with prints by late mediaeval artists only known by their monogram, such as the fascinating 'Master W with the key'. But also famous artists like Lucas Cranach, Lucas van Leyden, Albrecht Dürer, and Hendrick Goltzius are ample represented. Art on Paper then continues its way through art history via the Italian Renaissance, the German nineteenth century and international photography of the nineteenth and twentieth century to far into the twentieth century. The visitor is thus enabled to literally look back through the galleries from Constant, Carel Visser and Ger van Elk on six centuries of art on paper.
Besides prints and drawings, there are also photos by Brassaï, Bill Brandt and Robert Capa from the thirties. New to the Rijksmuseum in recent years is the acquisition of Dutch art from the second half of the twentieth century, of which it aims to build up a representative collection. More modern times are represented by work from Sanne Sannes, Johan van der Keuken and the recently departed Wally Elenbaas, up to recent landscapes and portraits from the photo commissions for Document of the Netherlands. In the inner tower, there is an introduction to the exhibition with large-scale works (1960-1990).
Alongside this exhibition, which focuses on West-European art, a selection of Japanese prints and illustrated books will be displayed that were acquired in the same period.
To mark the departure of Ronald de Leeuw, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is also holding a special exhibition of works acquired between 1996 and 2008. Forty works, including paintings, sculpture, silver and Asiatic art, will be on display throughout the rooms, giving a picture of twelve years of collection policy. The exhibition will be held in the Philips Wing of the Rijksmuseum, from 12 June to 31 August.
Rijksmuseum Maastricht is a unique alliance among Dutch museums. It aims to provide a forum for the display and study of Early Italian painting (1300 –1600) and late mediaeval and Renaissance painting and sculpture from the Southern Netherlands, with a focus on research, publication and exhibitions. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is participating on the basis of its prestigious collections, and the Bonnefantenmuseum on the basis of its specific sub-collections and relevant expertise. The central theme of Rijksmuseum Maastricht is the focus on the workshop practices of artists.
