SVA Cartooning Instructors Create Comics Textbook
PRESS RELEASE
June 2008
SVA faculty members Jessica Abel and Matt Madden have just released a new comics textbook, Drawing Words and Writing Pictures (First Second).
The softcover book is, according to the authors, “a complete course of study and a complete pedagogical approach to the basics of comics.” Over the course of 15 lessons, Drawing Words takes a step-by-step approach to learning page and panel design, storytelling techniques, lettering and other important skills that any comic-book creator needs to master. “Readers really will finish this book prepared to make comics on their own,” says Abel.
Abel and Madden are both accomplished comics artists (their most recent books are La Perdida and 99 Ways to Tell a Story, respectively) who developed Drawing Words by combining their years of professional experience with the lessons they’ve developed for their courses in the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department.
In October, Houghton Mifflin will publish the 2008 edition of The Best American Comics, an annual anthology for which Abel and Madden are series editors.
