June 2008
At this year’s ICFF, the most important trade fair for contemporary design in North America, red dot presented a selection of design concepts which have won awards in the red dot award: design concept. A spectacular wall consisting of 6,000 connected bottles formed the backdrop of the exhibition.
The term “United Bottles” stands for a novel water bottle concept, which through constructive “misuse” becomes a building component. The “United Bottles” were designed by the “Instant Architects”. Developed for use in refugee areas for instance, empty PET bottles can be taken out of the recycling process if necessary and transported into the respective crisis area. There they can be filled with local materials such as stones, sand or soil.
Thanks to their connection system they can be used as construction material for small buildings and to repair damaged buildings.
Their innovative concept impressed the jury of the red dot award: design concepts 2007, who awarded the “United Bottles” with a red dot: best of the best. This makes it one of the best design concepts of the complete competition.
red dot interviewed Tobias Klauser of Instant Architects, who accompanied the exhibition at the ICFF. The interview is available at this website.
