Pen to Pixel: 100 Years of Design Education at Swinburne
EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Chapel off Chapel
Prahran

16 July-3 August 2008

The outstanding work of Swinburne alumni from the earliest years when design and art training were provided will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at Chapel off Chapel.

Swinburne design historian Nanette Carter has curated the exhibition and has commissioned other leading design historians to contribute new research on successful Australian and international designers.

“The exhibition brings together a diverse range of individuals and practices focusing on a series of successful designers, media practitioners and design studios established by Swinburne graduates,” Carter said.

“Through their achievements, changes in Australian culture, society and economy can be charted along with the rise of new design professions and new media disciplines.”

Featured Swinburne alumni include:
Ellison Harvie, the first woman senior architect of a major architectural practice in Australia and the first woman associate of the RAIA, who helped design and supervise the construction of the five multi-storey blocks of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Graphic designer Joseph Greenberg, whose highly visible and innovative work included surrealist-inspired covers for Australian Home Beautiful magazine and a brilliant optimistic poster for the Australian Government that attracted Europeans to emigrate to Australia in the immediate post war period.

Internationally acclaimed film director Gillian Armstrong, whose recent work includes an innovative documentary Unfolding Florence, about textile designer and businesswoman Florence Broadhearst, and Death Defying Acts, a critically acclaimed story of the supernatural inspired by the character of Harry Houdini. Armstrong’s impeccably crafted films engage both critics and popular audiences with the notable performances of their strong lead characters and compelling visual design.

Super Action Go Team is a multimedia studio comprising three young designers whose multidisciplinary skills and inventive digital design has brought them a range of major corporate clients within Australia and international commissions.

A publication to accompany the exhibition documents the changing face of education in design, media and art over the past century.

The exhibition will be held in association with the Melbourne International Design Festival.
