School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Character” a drawing and photography exhibition by current students and recent alumni exploring a range of subjects, including race relations, personal phobias and social interaction. The artists include Seoung Hyon Cho, Matthew Freel, Dongyun Lee and David Rapoport. The exhibition is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.
Seoung Hyon Cho’s drawings examine phobias with a light-hearted touch, treating the subject of fear with ironic humor. The artist covers his surfaces with dark beeswax then creates his imagery by removing parts of the material. Cho is a recent alumnus from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department.
Matthew Freel’s works focus on Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion, and the incendiary racial politics that surrounded him. Executed exclusively in black and white, and ranging from loose compositions to fine-detailed renderings, the artist’s paintings and drawings reconstruct events from an all-but-forgotten history. Freel is a recent alumnus from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department.
Dongyun Lee emphasizes contour and line in his eight-foot-wide drawing Hope. Populated with winged figures reminiscent of Icarus, the artist offers viewers a postmodern tableau from which they can create their own narratives. Lee is a recent alumnus from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department.
Shot in an unembellished documentary fashion reminiscent of Diane Arbus, David Rapoport’s candid black-and-white portraits reveal subtle dramas beneath commonplace appearances. Rapoport is a current student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
