On 24 June 2008, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, together with the Seoul Design Center, hosted the second German-Korean Cooperation Forum on Design at the red dot design museum. Interested designers and entrepreneurs used the chance to establish interesting contacts and exchange views with a delegation from Korea. The main topic was “Life Science Design”, an increasingly relevant and important field in both Germany and Korea due to similar demographic developments in both industrial nations.
After the welcome speech by host Professor Dr. Peter Zec, design expert and president of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, and Dr. Peter Scholz, Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, keynote speaker Markus Wild, WILDDESIGN medical, pointed out that our population will grow up to 8.5 billion people by the year 2030. While in the EU in 2005 for every 100 people of employable age (15-64) just 24.9 people were over 64, the quota of citizens over 64 will reach 53.2 per hundred before 2050. “This demographic change asks for design solutions especially with regard to the treatment of the elderly”, so the appeal of the design experts to the designers. “Different disciplines have to work together to create adequate design solutions.”
From Korea, Professor Soon-In Lee, President of the Seoul Design Center, presented the City of Seoul which was recently named World Design Capital 2010. With regard to the forum`s topic, Professor Lee will shared some of Seoul’s plans to increase the creative energies of its design industry leading up to 2010 and beyond.
