The SCAD Museum of Art announces a gift of recent works on paper donated by Mark Landis in honor of his father, the late Lt. Cmdr. Arthur Landis Jr. The donation includes drawings and watercolors by Paul Signac (1863-1936), Raphael Soyer (1899-1987), Walter Anderson (1903-65), Stanton MacDonald Wright (1890-1973), Milton Avery (1885-1965) and Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), as well as a French Academy drawing in red chalk.
Three of the pieces--by Signac, Laurencin and Soyer--are on display in the exhibition "Focus on 20th-century Art: Highlights from SCAD's Collection," which runs through Dec. 31 at the newly renovated SCAD Museum of Art, 227 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., two doors north of the Savannah Visitors Center.
Landis spent much of his childhood traveling with his military family. He visited museums and read auction catalogs wherever they stayed and eventually became an art dealer in San Francisco. He currently resides in Mississippi.
"The SCAD Museum of Art is most appreciative of Mr. Landis' generosity in sharing these pieces with SCAD students," said Maureen Burke, executive museum director and dean of academic initiatives. "The Signac watercolor is a charming view of boats on the Seine from around 1900, while the Laurencin work is a self-portrait drawing typical of this French woman artist. The Soyer drawing of a nude is shown next to a Soyer print with a similar subject. The Landis gift brings a new depth to the museum's 20th-century collection of works on paper."
