Steve Brodner Shows Political Cartoons at the Norman Rockwell Museum
PRESS RELEASE

July 2008

Members of the SVA community are contributing artworks to a pair of politically charged exhibitions. BFA Illustration and Cartooning faculty member Steve Brodner is staging “Raw Nerve! The Political Art of Steve Brodner” at the Norman Rockwell Museum, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, through Sunday, October 26.

Brodner applies his singular style to today’s most prominent leaders and their legacies, including NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, President Bill Clinton, Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama. He is also keeping current with “Naked Campaign,” an ongoing series of political cartoons in the New Yorker magazine.

Also striking a political theme is “Eminent Domain: Contemporary Photography and the City,” the current exhibition at the New York Public Library, Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The show features the work of contemporary New York–based photographers, including Thomas Holton (MFA 2005 Photography, Video and Related Media) and Reiner Leist (MFA 1996 Photography and Related Media), whose works intersect and resonate with current concerns about the reorganization of urban space and its public use in New York City.

In addition to proposed regulations that may clash with First Amendment rights to photograph in public places, the works on display examine the legal power of eminent domain, which permits the taking of private property for public use. “Eminent Domain” is on view at the library through Friday, August 29.
